As we climbed down the hill I did wonder, "Where is he taking me? Is this safe? I knew I wouldn’t have walked there alone as a gringo – tourists had been robbed along the same road. But I wasn’t too concerned. It was during the day and Victor is a regular local guy who speaks fluent Spanish and understands Mayan and indigenous culture.
